It was shortly shot down by a CNN reporter.
The GOP tweeted on Friday: “Let freedom be free.” It added a quote allegedly from Washington saying: “Will probably be discovered an unjust and unwise jealousy to deprive a person of his pure liberty upon the supposition he could abuse it.”
However CNN reporter Andrew Kaczynski fired again that Washington had nothing to do with the quote, based on the George Washington Mount Vernon Property. It lists the phrase within the GOP tweet underneath “spurious quotations.”
Kaczynski helpfully included a hyperlink together with his corrective tweet.
The property has been unable to definitively hint the precise origin of the quote. One Twitter wag attributed it to a 1650 letter written by Oliver Cromwell, a British politician of the 1600s. A number of different fact-checking web sites agreed.
Critics on Twitter discovered it searingly ironic that the GOP screwed up a quote about freedom amid the social gathering’s crackdowns on reproductive rights for girls, human rights for the LGBTQ neighborhood, individuals of shade and voting rights.
The GOP quote was nonetheless up late Saturday evening, and nonetheless falsely attributed to Washington.
